ABOUT ME

I am Gina Kanagawa, Founder of Great Wave Therapy, PLLC.

I am so happy you are here!

A relational approach to healing grounded in neuroscience & compassion

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a Registered Art Therapist in Washington state. It has been my honor and privilege to walk alongside many courageous children, teens, adults, and families in their healing journeys since 2005. Over the past 2 decades, I have practiced in a range of mental health settings from therapeutic schools, to community mental health agencies, to group practice, and now private practice.

PROFESSIONALLY

My highly relational approach to counseling interweaves clinical art therapy with the foundational tenets of the relational neurosciences including polyvagal theory, Interpersonal Neurobiology, parts work, and attachment theory and research. I have a passion and commitment to supporting children, teens, adults and families with vulnerable nervous systems, whether the vulnerability stems from backgrounds in trauma, neurodivergence (including autism, ADHD, and giftedness), anxiety, toxic stress, Misophonia, or simply individual differences. A core value of my approach is to be LGBTQ+ and neurodiversity- affirming, as well as providing trauma-informed care for all of my clients.

In our collaborative work together, I assist clients in learning ways to increase regulation, connection, and felt-safety in their daily lives. Our therapeutic journey often includes deepening our understanding of the science of being human, and growing our ability to stay connected and attuned to ourselves first, before turning our attention to attuning to others within our closest relationships. My commitment to my clients is to provide a climate of acceptance and nonjudgmental presence, so that sessions become a safe place to break out of old patterns, try new things, and practice more compassion for self and others.

PERSONALLY

I am so grateful to live in a naturally beautiful place like the Pacific Northwest! In my free time, I enjoy drinking coffee, aerial yoga, cooking, connecting with family and friends, and singing along to music.
